Coach McGannon was born and raised in Norwalk, Ct, attended Fairfield Prep and then Dartmouth College where he played basketball and golf. The events of December 2012 in Newtown created a desire within his organization, Basketball Basics, to give back, lend a hand, show support, show up and be involved.  We are excited beyond words to share with Newtown's youth basketball players strong fundamental skill development assisted by the terrific Yale University and Fairfield University's Mens basketball programs.

Basketball Basics was blessed with the opportunity to run basketball training in Newtown, CT in late December 2013.  Coach McGannon grew up in nearby Norwalk, CT, attended high school at Fairfield Prep and played many times in Newtown and Sandy Hook as a youth.  Since the tragic events of 2012, we have wanted to participate in some manner, giving back whatever it is we can in support of that community.  Many thanks go out to the Newtown Youth Academy's director, Cody Foss, who spearheaded and approved Basics participation.

Michigan Families: how can you help?

  1. Assist Basics with travel expenses (We donate all services and time)
  2. Donate to NYA, see left hand navigation
  3. Help with shirts!  We don't have any to bring with us yet this year.
  4. Come with us!

Many Michigan families also participated, donating money to Newtown's youth programming and simply being supportive while we were away.  Given how busy our Michigan instructional calander is, there were some inevitable dropped balls, missed classes, incorrect rosters.  Every single parent was supportive and patient in this endeavor.  A heartfelt thanks goes out to you.

Our Michigan kids send LOVE and ART to our Newtown  friends!!

Please also note I believe our participation in Newtown is a strong example for your kids about community service and giving of yourself to those in need.  We hope in 2014 we will actually have a few Michigan families attend with us!  That would be cool.

Basics instruction is based fully on the teachings and approach of UCLA's Coach John Wooden. (why not try and copy the best coach of all time?) An appropriate comment Coach made follows.  We can't wait to return next year!

"No written word, no spoken plea can teach our youth what they should be.

Nor all the books on all the shelves, it's who the teachers are themselves."
