"Basketball Basics AYBT approach offers area players the highest level of competition. We teach players to make plays under pressure, to expect pressure, to apply pressure and to be used to pressure. We do not teach plays. We teach players how to play.
We also believe travelling hundreds of miles is wasted time and effort when comparable (and sometimes superior) competition is available right here. We will play in Muskegon/Spring Lake, Holland, Grand Rapids and possibly Ludington or Kalamazoo.
Because we have several High School players being actively recruited by colleges, we MAY travel to 1 out-of-state event in an effort for more regional exposure. See player profiles.
All practices are in Ferrysburg. We arranged practice games last year against Muskegon, Grand Haven, Shelby and Spring Lake, in which case we sometimes have use of their gyms for these scrimmages.
If your son or daughter already plays AYBT and you are not sure they should switch, please read "What if my son or daughter is already on an AYBT team?" to the right. Scroll down about half way. You may always call as well to discuss. 616 402-1600. Thank you."

“Thank you very much for putting together a league to develop players in West Michigan! At U of M, we strive to be solid fundamentally on the offensive end and to frustrate teams with our defense, so we are definitely on your side! You are running things in a terrific fashion....keep up the great work.”

"In an age where too much emphasis is put on "street ball", basketball fundamentals are clearly being sacrificed for one-on-one moves, individual egos and overall flashy play. Basketball Basics is exactly what we need from the very youngest levels through high school. Coach McGannon is an excellent coach and an excellent person. I would place him in the extremely high end of the coaching spectrum. He would be an asset to any young person looking to improve in the game of basketball."

Manu Ginoboli of the San Antonio Spurs was drafted with the 57th pick in the 1999 NBA Draft. He was not even invited to their camp in 2000, 2001 or 2002. He finally was invited in 2003 and he made the team. When asked why they drafted Ginoboli, the management answered:
"We are looking for hard-working, high character, team oriented, mentally tough, coachable and unselfish players. Ginoboli fit the bill on every level."
The Spurs have won 4 NBA Championships since 2003. Ginoboli, now 38 years old, is still playing a key role again in the success of the team.
Basketball Basics reinforces and fosters these traits with all our players. These traits are equally important on and off the court. Players trying out and/or making our spring/summer teams will be held (and in some cases introduced to) this high standard of behavior, effort and selflessness.

"Our 1st year's involvement with AYBT was terrific. Please note 80% of our time together with your sons and daughters will be in Ferrysburg, in the gym, PRACTICING. Just like good students prepare for exams and tests by STUDYING, good players prepare for their tests (THE GAMES!) by practicing. We will have a ratio of Practice Time to Game Time of roughly 4 to 1. Players who make our teams will become more competitive basketball players. Their skills will be sharper, they will lean how to handle adversity, they will understand what a TEAM is and what their ROLE on that team is and they will ultimately understand that a focused and self-directed work ethic will benefit them on and off the court."

Coach,
Thank you so much for coaching AYBT. Allison really enjoyed it and wants to try out again next year, 2012. Would you please register her: Allison Sides. I will send the fee to your Spring Lake address.
Thanks again,
Lori Sides
"We are excited to hear you are running AYBT teams. Spencer (back row, 2nd from left) has benefitted greatly from your instruction over the years, and it shows. He was the leading scorer in West Michigan as a sophomore (21 ppg), again as a junior (23 ppg) and over several weeks this year was the STATE'S LEADING SCORER. (32 ppg) Nothing intimidates him. Much of that confidence can be traced to your teaching poise, composure with constant reinforcement. And his player profile has been great, as you know many colleges have made positive steps toward him. I think area kids who are serious about the game will get involved with you." Jim and Pam Krannitz
AYBT is very competitive. Teams practice and have played together frequently, some for years. If your son or daughter is a developing player or you have a team in this category, you are highly encouraged to register for our S.I.B.L. (Summer Instructional Basketball League). While also competitive, the S.I.B.L.'s focus is skill development. We continue to teach and instruct even during the scrimmages, a terrific method for developmental players to learn the game and build competitive habits.

An approach deeply rooted in Coach John Wooden’s philosophy of conditioning, understanding the team concept and mastering the fundamentals of the game. "I enjoyed our visit this morning and appreciate the work you are doing through Basketball Basics. Because of teachers and organizations like yours, Coach Wooden's philosophy and principles will continue to impact countless lives. I'm sorry that you never met him but you certainly have a connection in common values, the family is aware of your organization. He respected and appreciated what you are doing. He felt there was no higher calling than being a teacher/coach and felt there was tremendous responsibility that came with it. To make that point, he often said: "No written word, no spoken plea can teach our youth what they should be. Nor all the books on all the shelves, it's what the teachers are themselves."
Keep up the good work, you are on the right track. Best wishes for continued success.
Bobby Field
Assistant Athletic Director, U.C.L.A
Advanced players must be able to make plays under pressure. A significant piece of our practice time and game style will be about playing with, and applying, pressure. This assumes the players have very good to excellent skills and conditioning to begin with.
Your kids will be treated fairly, with respect yet in a firm, reliable manner. While my expectation is to improve every day, I am patient and encouraging. “Young people need models, not critics.” Coach Wooden
Another clear advantage with making our teams will be the opportunity to be added to our Player Profiles, a simple and effective college recruiting tool.
This is an opportunity for competitive growth for the area's best players. Some players may prefer to stay with their current teams, others may look to compete at this level with players from different schools. It is likely we will have players from many communities competing together on 1 squad. The rosters will be formed based on the players performance in try outs. "We are excited to hear you are running AYBT teams. Spencer has benefitted greatly from your instruction over the years, and it shows. He was the leading scorer in West Michigan last year as a sophomore (21 ppg) and as a junior (23 ppg). Nothing intimidates him. There are many local ties and friendships on teams from previous years. If the social component of these teams is equal to or greater than the competitive component, these players should stay with their teams. If however you are looking for the strongest potential for competitive growth for your son or daughter, our approach at Basketball Basics offers that. It’s also a great opportunity to meet and play with kids from different communities with different skill sets.
We only permit 12 players at try outs. In addition to the drills and scrimmaging, several skills will be measured objectively, providing a good comparison of the players skills.
Players will be challenged to learn how to actually “play.” Can we teach them to recognize certain situations, can we teach them to make plays under pressure, can we teach them to channel their frustration and disappointment correctly, will they become better players by understanding the game and not simply relying on their physical gifts? Can players win games with both their feet and their heads? Can we learn to compete and win versus teams of superior athletic ability? Can they embrace the role they are given and make the team better? When roles change (which is frequent), can they adapt?
"We don't teach plays to the players. We teach the players how to play." Coach McGannon
"A player who makes a team great is more valuable than a great player." Coach Wooden
