We serve on the board of this group that helps special needs children lead more active lives. Check out our visit to Ann Arbor and our games with U of M's womens basketball team last year, with special appearances from Zack Novak, Manny Harris, Tim Hardaway and Coach Beilein! Thank you Coach Plitzuweit, the Ann Arbor Angel!
APPEAL: we need your help. Not so much your donations, which are always helpful, but your TIME. If you would like your high school athletic teams to be involved in a most worthwhile event, please call me and we will set up a date. (616) 402-1600 The pictures at the link above say it all. The only kids who will benefit more than our special needs children will be your athletes, your school, your community. Coach Wooden
A note Coach Wooden carried with him all the time, written by his father:
“Be true to yourself. Make each day a masterpiece. Help others. Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible. Make friendship a fine art. Build a shelter against a rainy day. Pray for guidance, count and give thanks for your blessings every day.”

Middle School Girls: Janaury 23, 2012 Try out date. MS Girls Pre-Season page
A player's chances of making any basketball team improve as his/her conditioning improves. These sessions are ideal in this regard. Because we only permit 12 players, there is essentially NO DOWN TIME. The players are running, moving and playing the entire time. We conduct many of the same drills that occur in try outs, and the players will have multiple repetitions each day. We also mirror what many school coaches require; sprints at the end of each practice.
Our approach is second to none in this area. Most players receive little or no training as it pertains to what a team is, how it operates, what roles are and how to best achieve success by understanding their role. This approach applies more to our high school players than to middle school kids, although we will discuss the team concept with all players. Players will get a strong dose of what a team is, traits coaches look for in their players (intangibles) and how to best use their individual skills to fill specific roles and make the team.
This is what Basketball Basics is all about. Kids may be in great shape, kids may understand the team concept but if a player can not shoot, dribble, pass and play effective defense, his/her chances are less than good to make the team. The percentage of kids making teams above speaks for itself. Players who attend our Pre-Season sessions will improve and sharpen their competitive basketball skills.

Coach John Wooden is the basis of what we do at Basketball Basics. His accomplishments as a coach and mentor can not be overstated. Coach Wooden died on June 4, 2010 at the age of 99. For those interested in learning more about his legacy, this New York Times article is a strong summary of the man.

Please note if your son or daughter has the ambition, desire and skill to consider college baketball, our player profile service is tested and affordable. Choosing either a 1 on 1 session or involvement in one of our leagues/camps will allow Coach McGannon to see their skills and help them improve. The potential may be there to be added to the profile.

Please note SHOOTING CLINICS wiil be conveniently scheduled on many dates adjacent to the pre-season instruction. This will permit efficient use of time in the gym, covering the conditioning and try out preparation process with the critical shooting skill.

About 75% of area middle school schools play at this time. Pre-Season Prep dates will be posted on this page

A player must have good pivoting and jump stop skills, they must be able to keep the ball up in many different circumstances, be able to use both hands with dexterity when shooting, dribbling and passing, they should understand basic defensive positioning, have good shooting mechanics, be able to run unabated for minutes at a time and also understand how to rebound and HELP OUT on defense. Beyond these physical skills, they should have an understanding of mental tenacity, discipline and handling adversity.
You will not find better preparation anywhere, the percentage of players making their teams speaks for itself.

Coach McGannon, I wanted to let you know Lily made the Unity Christian BBall team! On the way home, the coach told her she was "very creative offensively, had a great shot and good ball handling and dribbling skills." Lily told me "Basketball Basics helped me so much! I don't think I would have made the team if I had not attended those shooting clinics and 1 on 1 sessions." She gave me lots of specifics like keeping the ball UP, not always banking all her shots and using her left hand appropriately (the Mikan Drill). Thanks so much!!
