Coach McGannon was the caddie master at Pinehurst #2 for 5 years, and ran all caddie operations for two Tour Championships and the 1994 United States Senior Open. His experience (pages 6 to 9) was central to a Rick Reilly article in a May 1994 Sports Illustrated issue. It was a fascinating experience to say the least, and offers a look at the game that is not well known.

We have applied our success with helping strong basketball players identify college programs to golf. Our Golf Player Profile works exactly the same way and is a GREAT way to get talented High School players in front of any college golf program. Examples below. Call 616 402-1600 for more info.

Coach McGannon has played competitive golf since high school, including D-1 at Dartmouth and 5 years as a professional based in Pinehurst, North Carolina. With the older kids who attend the basketball sessions, we emphasize the importance of "getting away" from the game occasionaly. It allows a player to stay fresh mentally. Ideally, whatever the sport might be, it should be relaxing, fun yet allow the player to keep his/her competitive juices flowing. The examples of great players doing this are many. Michael Jordan played competitive golf frequently in the off season. Jack Nicklaus was known to take as much as 6 weeks to 2 months off, playing competitive tennis. Several notable football players play competitive golf, including Drew Breese, John Elway and Steve DeBerg.
Additionally, the applications between golf and basketball are many, particularly as they apply to the mental side of the game. Staying in the moment, dealing with adversity, blocking out external stimuli, creating rock solid routines and handling disappointment are just a few of the mental exercises the 2 sports share.
Please find the golf instruction below and how it works. As with the basketball instruction, player numbers are always limited and the focus will be on the game's fundamentals. I hope you and a friend can take advantage of this instruction. Contact via e-mail to BasketballBasics@charter.net or call (616) 402-1600.
"Thank you for your help with my golf game. We have achieved our objectives of lowering my score, minimizing the big numbers, making my game more consistent in all weather and improving my short game. The changes we have made in the setup, swing, attitude, thought process and style have worked well. I appreciate your open minded suggestions and patience."

"It may be spring before we get out to the golf course again. But we most certainly must do that. I played once since our round and hit the ball much better than I have in years. The lighter grip and simpler swing thought has made a difference. Thanks."

2011 year end summary:
We had a solid year in 2011, showing improvement in most every match and seeing terrific improvement in several players. The year started very slowly due to our wet spring. We had almost as many rain out dates in March and early April as we did practice dates. But the boys hung in there, showed good intestinal fortitude and played hard in tough conditions.
Some statistical numbers and awards follow for 2011. I hope your sons enjoyed the season.
