Page Summary:

Colleges are looking for hardworking, high-character, team oriented, mentally tough, coachable and unselfish players. Basketball Basics fosters these traits in all its' instruction.

Our profiles are based on having worked with and seen these players compete.   These are 1st hand evaluations from a creditable source.

There are no guarantees of scholarships, NONE.  But we do communicate with many college programs and have access to ALL college coaching staffs.  Simply being known is 90% of the battle, and initial recruiting is almost always done ON LINE.  We achieve high marks in both these categories.

College staffs often sift through hundreds of player names and evaluations.  Basketball Basics provides a quick, concise and reliable report on these players' skills.

These profiles are a great way for the players to get their names out in the college mix, and also a great way for colleges to get a 1st hand report on talented high school players.

When do you create this profile?

The ideal time to create this profile is sophomore or junior year (stronger players can consider being added freshman year)  The larger the recruiting window of opportunity is, the better.  College staffs look 2, 3 and 4 years out at talent on the horizon.  While it is not too late to be added their senior year, many programs will have finished their next year's recuiting, or at the very least, have few if any openings for next fall's matriculation.

Profile Cost: $250

This one time fee covers a player's high school years.  Included in this fee:

  • Initial Profile Setup
  • Updates and adjustments as the information changes: size, new photos, awards, GPA, statitics, articles, video, honors, test scores
  • Going to $375 in 2012

E-Mail Broadcast Cost: $250

Communication with up to 40 college coaching staffs of the player's choice. (this expense can be delayed until the timing is right to broadcast the college staffs.  For example, after a big year, or play off run, or state/local award.

  • Player will have access to their own link. They can add links, articles, videos ON THEIR OWN.
  • Video Clip; Retain all games on video, make note of 6 to 10 GREAT plays, rip these plays onto a separate file, and then add that file to your link.
  • The profile often attracts interest from college coaching staffs.  At this point, when contact has been made, these staffs will frequently request video.
  • This is a hard-target search with premeditation and insight into a player's potential, interests and future goals.  The player identifies up to 40 colleges of interest, we directly contact those coaching staffs.

  • Going to $375 in 2012

Interested in playing in college?

If you're a top student-athlete interested in playing basketball in college, here's a quick checklist of things you need to do:

  • Fill out questionnaire: Call the Basketball office at the schools you are interested in to receive a copy of their prospective student-athlete questionnaire.

  • Understand the eligibility guidelines: You can check NCAA eligibility guidelines and register with the NCAA clearinghouse at the official NCAA web site.

  • Complete a CSS Profile: The College Scholarship Service is the financial aid division of most schools. Many colleges, universities, and scholarship programs use the information collected on PROFILE to help them award nonfederal student aid funds.

  • Contact Admissions: Formal applications are processed through each school’s Office of Admissions. For information on applying, contact the Office of Admissions. You can also download many applications from the school’s web sites.

  • Consider this service: We have nearly 3 dozen players now at the college level.  We are an independent, 3rd party evaluation of talent.  You will be known by up to 40 schools of YOUR CHOICE.

SAT Info

  • For more information, to register or to find the next test date for the SAT I or II, please visit www.collegeboard.com

ACT Info

  • For more information, to register or to find the next test date for the ACT, please visit www.act.org

Contacts

As a high school student-athlete, you may call, write, fax or email colleges at any time.

This is a basketball rule: as College coaches, they may call you on or after June 21 following your Junior year.

As college coaches, they may write, fax or email you only after September 1 of your Junior year of high school. There is no limit on the number of correspondences per week.

Campus Visits

Unofficial Visit - When you, as a prospect, visit a college campus at your own expense. There is no limit on how many times you may visit a college "unofficially".

Official Visit - When you, as a prospect, visit a college campus at the partial or total expense of the college's representative of athletics (i.e. a coach). You may only take five (5) official visits in total and never more than one (1) to the same school.

Player Profile Service

  • Identify strong players who have the ambition, skill and drive to play college basketball
  • Having worked with these players first-hand, Coach McGannon composes a brief and concise player profile/evaluation
  • Post the profile on line, updating each player's page as needed
  • Broadcast once a year to 40 colleges of the player's choice.
  • Cost is $250 for the profile and $250 for the broadcast.
  • NOTE: Cost going to $375 for profile and $375 for broadcast in 2012.
  • RECOMMENDATION: sometimes the profile alone will garner attention for the player as this link is viewed regularly by college coaching staffs.  The broadcast fee can wait until the player's junior year, possibly senior Fall/Winter.  But the profile is a necessary 1st step.
  • Players who compete on a Basketball Basics AYBT team are perfectly positioned to be added to this link.
  • NEXT STEP: communicate with Coach McGannon and get your son or daughter on the profile.  The longer and wider the recruiting window of opportunity is, the greater the chance the player will be known, seen and recruited.

Congratulations to Evan Bruinsma, named Class D Michigan's Player of the Year.  Evan has chosen to play at a terrific D-1 school with an awesome schedule (Butler, Syracuse, others) the Titans of the University of Detroit!!  Great job Evan.

EvanBruinsma2

We worked with Evan multiple times during his middle and early high school years in summer camps and Pre-Season Prep sessions. Additionally, he was contacted by Harvard, Davidson, Northeastern, Idaho State, Air Force and others.  These college contacts were made directly through this service.

Coach McGannon,

Thank you for helping us navigate through the recruiting process for Evan. Landing at Detroit is a great fit, we are excited to see how he does next year. Your input and guidance helped Evan a lot. With schools like Davidson and Harvard in the mix, it helped move the process along with the other schools including Detroit.  Not only were you instrumental in Evan's development as a player, but your opinions and guidance helped us deal with the recruiting process.  Thank you again.

Henry Bruinsma

Coach McGannon is a resource for players and parents in determining which schools may best fit the player's profile.  Typical reply below from a coach.

Coach McGannon

We could definitely use some size and I am still looking for a strong point guard. Keep me posted on players in this category.  Great resource, thanks.

Video Link

Part of this package will be to add a video link of the player to their profile.  This will give a full picture of the athlete to the coaching staffs. There should be an equitable split between offensive and defensive highlights. This will be added to their profile link.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Recommendation on Video Clip:

1. Have every game, maybe some practices video-taped

2. Have some one in the stands (or perhaps the player him/herself) note the game time of a particularly impressive play or plays.

3. Over the course of 10 games, there should be an accumulation of game dates and times where these plays can be ripped from and placed on a highlight reel.

4. The total time of a highlight reel should not exceed 5 minutes.  Here is an example.

5. Provide the clip and it will be added to the link.  The player also can have access to his or her own link and they can do this themselves.

FAFSA Tip

January 1st is the first day you can submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. FAFSA forms are evaluated on a first come first serve basis so you are strongly encouraged to submit yours on or near January 1st. Many states have a March 1st deadline, and in some states the deadline is February. You do not need to be admitted to college to apply for financial aid! However, you must be admitted to actually receive funds.

The FAFSA form is free. You can get a copy of the FAFSA from your guidance counselor, from the financial aid office at a local college or by calling 1-800-4-FED-Aid. The online version is available at fafsa.ed.gov.

Coach McGannon,

I appreciate the feedback on these players.  The biggest thing we run into is the academic side- we are the most selective public university in Texas- our average SAT score for incoming freshman is always above 1200 (on just the math and critical reading portions).  If these players are interested in us, please have them contact their registrar to fax unofficial transcripts to me at the number listed below.  Please have them include SAT/ACT scores and their class ranks. Thanks again for the e-mail- we are always looking for guys that can help us win more games!
