PLAYING UP

We highly encourage this practice, defined as stronger, younger players PLAYING UP in an older age group.  (in some case playing up multiple age groups depending upon the skill level of the player).  Please speak with Coach Hazekamp before registering your son or daughter in an older age group.

"In Brazil, unstructured play is the standard when young.  Children kick balls in alleys, on beaches, anywhere with friends and neighbors. This is how most of the Brazilian greats, from Pele to Ronaldinho, were introduced to the sport. Organized games were delayed until age 8 or 9.  The result?  Brazil has such an abundance of talent that soccer observers say the South American nation could probably field 4 separate teams all of which would be competitive in the World Cup.

Ball Control MUST BE the basis of the game. The focus must be on attacking skills. That 7 year olds should not play in any formats larger than 5-on-5 to maximize touches and keep everyone involved. That no child should get slotted into one position until well into his/her teens. That individual technique is far more important to teach through age 16 than tactics are. That coaches need to be quality demonstrators, so that kids can visually lock down the fundamentals. That yelling at players should not be tolerated.  And, above all, that training must be fun."

Please meet our soccer coach, Dan Hazekamp.  Dan is a terrific young coach and was a high level player in high school and college. I worked with Dan on the basketball court, where he was also an outstanding player.  Most importantly, I know Dan to be a patient, encouraging and kid-focused coach.  Your sons and daughters will greatly benefit from working with Coach Hazekamp.
